A different path to the internet.
A VPN changes how your device reaches a network. Understanding that path helps you understand its limits.
Start with the tunnel.
A VPN creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN endpoint. Internet traffic routed through that connection then continues from the VPN service towards its destination.
The protection offered by that tunnel applies to its own part of the route. Websites and apps still need their own secure connections, such as HTTPS, to protect information on the rest of the journey.
Trust still has a place in the picture.
Using a VPN changes who operates part of your connection. That makes the provider’s data practices, implementation, and documentation relevant to your decision.
A VPN is not a promise of complete anonymity. Signing in to a website, accepting tracking, or sharing personal information can still identify you to that service.
Your key determines your locations.
Amnezia assigns a server when you connect. Connected status requires a tunnel handshake; the traffic counters show actual transfers.
